Skype, when it was still part of e Bay (s EBAY), issued quarterly updates but those have now stopped.
Skype is now the largest provider of international phone calls in the world.
In September 2005, e Bay bought Skype for .5 billion.
The founders of Skype then concentrated on a streaming video service called Joost, which unfortunately wasn’t very successful.
In the last few years Skype has made headlines for two reasons: its acquisition by Microsoft for 8.5 billion dollars and Skype’s replacement of Messenger. Skype’s origins date back 10 years to Estonia, developed by the creators of Kazaa, the well-known P2P downloader.
The same Peer to Peer technology is utilized for voice calls, and even the origin of the name of the program: Skype is short for “Sky Peer to Peer”.
Over the last decade, international call volume has jumped from 71.7 billion minutes in 1997 to 343 billion in 2007, according to Telegeography's research.

Facebook said that the feature will be rolled out to other regions “over the coming months”.
